The management of the University of Cape Coast in the Central Region has closed down all food joints and eateries on campus to control the spread of cholera and food poisoning, which are afflicting students.
The school’s Director of health, Dr Kabiru Azeez, said the closure takes immediate effect.
At least 47 students were rushed to the hospital with diarrhoea. One person died. Some of the students were also affected by a mass food poisoning episode.
Cholera has affected close to 13,000 people in Ghana and killed more than 100 people.
The regional capital, Accra, has recorded more than 12,000 cases with scores dead.
The UCC situation is the first of its kind recorded on any University campus since the disease started festering.
Dr Azeez, however, told STARR NEWS the disease is on the decline on campus.
