UCC mobile phone thief grabbed

Cape Coast, Feb. 16, GNA – Eric Ebow Mensah, a 22-year old barber in Cape Coast, was on Wednesday arraigned at a Cape Coast circuit court, presided over by Mr Beresford Acquah, on a charge of stealing six different kinds of mobile phones valued at 7.5 million cedis from some halls of residence of University of Cape Coast (UCC).

Mensah, who also stole 250 pounds sterling and an unspecified amount of naira from the students, pleaded not guilty and was granted a 50 million cedis bail with one surety to be justified and will be re-arraigned on Thursday, March 3, 2005.

According to Chief Inspector Hope Azasoo, the prosecutor, Mensah on November 27 last year allegedly sneaked into the room of Ms Linda Aikins and colleague students and stole one ‘Motorola V6001’ phone valued at 800,000 cedis, two ‘Nokia 3330’phones worth 3 million cedis, 250 pounds sterling and an unspecified amount of naira.

Chief inspector Azasoo said on December 1, last year also, the accused allegedly returned to the UCC campus around 0400 hrs and secretly entered into the room of Ms Faustina Addei and other room mates and stole two ‘Nokia 2100’ phones and a ‘Nokia 110 phone, all valued at 3.7 million cedis.

However, ‘luck run out’ for the accused this time and he was caught by some students, who handed him over to the University security officers, and when he was searched, one ‘Nokia 2100’ belonging to Ms Faustina Addei was found on him, he added.

The prosecutor said the security officers handed him over to the police with the retrieved phone as exhibit.

Meanwhile, police investigations into the matter continue.
