The University of Cape Coast (UCC) Governing Council has appointed Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, as the interim Vice-Chancellor.
This decision follows a directive from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and was made during an emergency council meeting on September 24, 2025.
The appointment is to ensure continuity and stability at the university, with Professor Aheto overseeing academic and administrative activities.
The Council has reassured the university community, stakeholders, and the public that UCC remains stable, and academic activities are proceeding without disruption.
This comes after GTEC directed former Vice-Chancellor Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong to step down due to retirement age issues, citing Article 199(1) of the 1992 Constitution and UCC’s statutes.
However, Professor Aheto’s interim appointment will be in effect until the Cape Coast High Court resolves the ongoing dispute regarding Professor Boampong’s tenure.
The UCC Council has assured stakeholders that academic and administrative operations will continue without disruption, maintaining stability during this leadership transition.
Meanwhile, the decision has been formally communicated to relevant parties, including the Chancellor, GTEC Director-General, and Professor Aheto himself.
