U/E: Shot policeman fights for life

A police officer in the Upper East region is fighting for his life after sustaining life-threatening injuries in a gun battle with suspected armed robbers.

The officer, unnamed, has been taken to the intensive care unit of the regional hospital for treatment.

Class News’ regional correspondent, William Jalula, reports that the shootout happened Sunday morning, as officers attempted foiling a heist by the gun-toting gang of robbers on motorcycles.

Two of the alleged robbers were shot and killed in the gun exchanges.

Their bodies were conveyed to the regional police headquarters in the bucket of a pick-up. The police, according to Jalula, are tight-lipped about the identity of the two.

Jalula said it is not clear where the shootout took place but residents in different parts of the region are anxious to know if any of those killed by the police is a relative.
