Two trapped to death in an old mine pit

Koniyaw (Ash), July 9, GNA- Tragedy struck Koniyaw, a mining community in the Amansie East district on Thursday when two young men from the town got trapped to death in an abandoned mine pit. The deceased were Castro Yeboah, 22, and Kwasi Nkaye, 19. Their bodies had been retrieved by the police and deposited at the Asante-Bekwai Government Hospital mortuary.

Mr Justice Amoa-Owusu, the District National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Co-ordinator, told the Ghana News Agency that the two had entered the pit in the night and were digging for gold when it caved in and buried them alive.

He said one Biamah who had gone with the deceased rushed to the town to inform the people who with the assistance of the police mobilised a rescue team.

Mr Amoa-Owusu said when the rescuers finally reached the scene they were already dead. 9 July 04
