Two stowaways fined Gh¢1,300 or face jail

A Takoradi Magistrate Court has fined two stowaways Gh¢ 650 each or in default face nine months imprisonment.

The two – Kwame Ato, 18, and Kojo Asamoah, 20 – pleaded guilty on counts of conspiracy to commit crime and stowaway, Wednesday, when they appeared before the court, presided over by Thomas Offidie.

State prosecutor ASP Isaac Appenteng told the court that the suspects on March 28, 2015, secretly boarded the vessel, MV Taasinge Maersk, at 1am and hid in it for 15 days before their cover was blown at Algeciras in Spain.

He disclosed that the two had in their possession some biscuits, Gari and water.
