Two shot dead by unknown assailant

THE Brong Ahafo Regional Police Command is investigating a case in which an unknown assailant under cover of darkness, allegedly fired a gunshot at three farmers at Asuano in the Nkoranza District, killing two of them and narrowly missing the third.

The police link the murder of Stephen Kwao, alias Efoh, and Kwasi Owusu Sekyere, also known as Bassare, both from Fiapre near Sunyani, to the alleged acquisition of disputed land by the deceased persons for the cultivation of vegetables.

Briefing The Mirror at Sunyani, Mr E. O. Brakatu, the Regional Police Commander said on September 23, one Kwasi Adjei, a native of Abesim, who had earlier paid visits to Asuano, despatched the two deceased persons and one Kwabena Adu Owusu to Asuano, to acquire a parcel of land to grow vegetables.

He said the three persons got to the village around 1.30 p.m. and settled with one Issaka Grushie who was known by Adjei and Owusu Sekyere.According to Mr Brakatu, in the night of September 24, a piece of wood was allegedly thrown into the room of the three strangers from outside.

He said the strangers who were scared by the incident, went out of the room in search of the perpetrators but to no avail so they decided to urinate and return to bed. Mr Brakatu said in the process, an unidentified gunman fired directly at them from a nearby bush killing Kwao instantly and seriously wounding Owusu-Sekyere but the third person, Adu Owusu escaped unhurt.

He said the following day, Adjei, in the company of Adu Owusu, Issaka Grushie and the assembly member for Abesim, lodged a complaint about the incident to the Donko-Nkwanta Police.

The Regional Police Commander said policemen were immediately despatched to the village where they found Kwao dead in a pool of blood while Owusu-Sekyere was in a critical condition.

He said Owusu-Sekyere was rushed to the Nkoranza St. Theresa’s Hospital where he died shortly after admission. Mr Brakatu stated that police initial investigations revealed that a red saloon car was seen before and after the commitment of the crime.

He said shortly after the incident the saloon car moved towards the Ayerade direction, which leads to Nkoranza and Ejura.Meanwhile, Adjei and Adu Owusu who were arrested in connection with the crime have been granted police inquiry bail and they to are report to the police periodically pending further investigations into the matter.
