Wa, March 25, GNA – The Wa Police Command has asked two police officers to produce three of the five cell breakers within 10 days or face sanctions in accordance with the Police Service Act. The two officers (names withheld) were on duty on Tuesday night at the Wa Police Station and at about 0245 hours five suspects, two of them convicted to six years prison terms each by a Wa circuit court managed to break two of the padlocks to the cell’s door and absconded. The Upper West Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Inspector Geoffrey Adu-Amankwah told the Ghana News Agency that the two convicted culprits, who were to serve their prison terms in Kumasi and Nsawam prisons, were those rearrested.
They have since been sent down to serve their sentences in those prisons, while the three other absconders had been charged with minor offences such as unlawful entry and theft.
Inspector Adu-Amankwah said the command was investigating the two officers to find out whether they were really at post when the incident happened and why they did not hear the noise when the suspects were breaking the padlocks.
He said all the cell breakers hailed from the region and police had visited their hometowns and other relatives’ residents but could not get any of them to arrest.
Inspector Adu-Amankwah has therefore appealed to the general public to help the police to re-arrest the three persons, who were on the run, and bring them to justice.
