Two persons fined for copyright offence

Kumasi, Jan. 10, GNA – An Ashtown District Court in Kumasi on Wednesday sentenced two persons to a fine of 80,000 Ghana cedis for piracy contrary to the section 42 (C) of the Copyright Law, Act 690 of 2005. Osei Boadu was fined 30,000 Ghana cedis or in default will serve a two-year jail term in hard labour while Kingsley Antwi was sentenced to a fine of 50,000 Ghana cedis or in default will serve a two-year jail term in hard labour. They pleaded guilty.

A bench warrant was issued by the court for the arrest of six other persons for committing the same offence. The six were in court but when they heard the sentence of their colleagues, they bolted. They are Tony Chuku, Lawrence Okutu, Akwasi Agyei, Osei Assibey, Kwame Kusi and Appiah Takyi.

Police Chief Inspector Rebecca Adjetey, prosecuting told the court that the eight were arrested by a team of policemen and a copyright taskforce at Adum in Kumasi on December 28, 2007 for selling pirated works of some musicians.
