Pramso (Ash), June 20, GNA- His Met Project, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), based in Oklahoma City, USA, in collaboration with the All African Baptist Fellowship (AABF) based in Kumasi, have released 13,000 dollars for malaria prevention in Ghana.
The amount would be used to purchase treated mosquitoes nets for pregnant women and children less than five years old and 1,800 treated nets had already been purchased for distribution.
The Reverend Timothy Thomas, Chief Executive Officer the NGO, said these at the Saint Michael’s Catholic Hospital at Pramso in the Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma District of Ashanti at the weekend, where over 500 treated nets where distributed to pregnant women. He said Ghana was the first country out of 22 African countries targeted for the project to benefit from the package.
Rev. Dr Frank Adams, General Secretary of the Fellowship, said the group was soliciting funds from its counterparts in the US to extend the project to the remaining 21 African countries, adding that, Togo and Burkina Faso would be among the next beneficiary countries.
He said government health institutions in Kumasi, some Churches and communities along Lake Bosomtwe, where malaria cases were very high would benefit from the package.
Mr Timothy Mensah, a pharmacist at the Kuntanase Government Hospital, said the use of treated mosquito nets was the safest, simplest and easiest way of controlling malaria.
He said a survey conducted by the Ghana Health Service last year showed that only four per cent of the total population used bed nets. Mr Mensah, therefore, called on the people to use treated mosquito nets in order to reduce the prevalence of malaria adding that, their usage will also help to cut down on their medical bills.
