Two new district assemblies inaugurated in Volta Region

Dambai (V/R), Aug. 20, GNA – Krachi East and South Dayi District Assemblies, two of the three new districts created in the Volta Region were on Thursday inaugurated at Dambai and Kpeve, respectively. The Adaklu-Anyigbe District could, however, not be inaugurated because of controversy over the location of its capital.

In his inaugural address, delivered on his behalf, President John Agyekum Kufuor cautioned communities litigating over the location of their district capitals to refrain from the act, since “these disagreements do not make for peace and positive change”.

He appealed for dispassionate discussions of the criteria for locating the district capitals, because the creation of the new districts is a process at broadening the scope of representation, democracy and strengthening Local Government Administration.

President Kufuor expressed the hope that the new districts would remain focused in improving the basic necessities of life at the local and rural levels and “do everything in their power to galvanise the people at town, area and urban council levels to deliver the needed services”. Traditional areas under the Krachi East and South Dayi Districts pledged their unflinching support for the Government.
