Two miners drown in Bogoso

Two employees of Golden Star Bogoso/ Prestea Limited (GSBPL), over the weekend died at the company’s site following torrential rainfall since Friday night.

The deceased have been identified as Mr. Kwasi Amponsah, 46, pump attendant, and Mr. Frank Owusu Afriyie, 29, laboratory technician.

Both incidents happened on Saturday and Sunday and their bodies have been deposited at the Tarkwa Government Hospital morgue and El-Freeman morgue at Apremdo for autopsy.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Emmanuel Mwinsori, Crime Officer in charge of Prestea Huni/Valley, confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency, and said investigation was being conducted to know the actual cause of both deaths.

According to some employees of the mining company, on Saturday, around 1930 hours, Mr Amponsah who lived with his wife and children at Bogoso, was on duty at the company’s north pit area.

Whilst there, the machine that pumps water out of the pit, ceased to work and the pit got full because of the torrential rainfall.

In an attempted to check the fault on the pumping machine, he fell into the pit and died instantly.

Mr Owusu Afiriyie, however, got drowned in one of the company’s swimming pools at the mine site, on Sunday around 01100 hours, when he attempted to swim.
