Two men jailed four years for defrauding student

Cape Coast, Aug. 17, GNA- Two male tricksters, who robbed a student of his mobile phone and money, were on Monday sentenced to a total of four years imprisonment in hard labour. Kwame Esson, a fisherman and Kwame Ntiako unemployed, both residents of Cape Coast, pleaded guilty to defrauding by false pretences and the court presided over by Mr Richard Asiedu-Badu, sentenced them to two years imprisonment each.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Ockom, said last Tuesday, the two men met the complainant, who is a student at the SAMO Senior High School at Siwudu, a suburb of Cape Coast, and showed him a substance they claimed was a diamond.

He said, the two men told the student that they could double the diamond for him, if they tied his mobile phone and money in a piece of cloth they were also holding. Chief Inspector Ockom said, convinced, the student gave them his Sony Ericsson mobile phone and a cash of GH¢30.00 and the two men put the ‘diamond’ and the money and phone in the cloth, tied it and asked him to untie it after 30 minutes. He said the student became suspicious after the two had left and untied the cloth immediately, only to find a big stone with his money and mobile phone gone.

Chief inspector Ockom said the student chanced upon Esson and Ntiako around the Jubilee Park in Cape Coast on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009 and raised the alarm, leading to their arrest with the assistance of people around. 17 Aug. 09
