Two men Appear in court for posing as BNI officers

Apam C/R), June 2, GNA – The Apam District Magistrate Court presided over by Justice Charles Wiafe, on Monday heard a case in which two men were brought before it for posing as operatives of the BNI from the Castle in Accra. Rockson Theophilus Ankomah, 32, and Alhaji Miohammed alias Amadu Baba, 38, pleaded not guilty and were remanded in police custody to reappear on June 3, 2010.

Justice Wiafe said he had taken a serious view of the case because some unscrupulous elements in the society had made the BNI “notoriously popular”. The Magistrate urged Ghanaians to help to redeem the image of the BNI. The accused were arrested at Gomoa Assin on May 21, 2010 when they were seen writing down car numbers of some people involved in the Gomoa Fetteh chieftaincy dispute.

When they were confronted they claimed to be officials of the BNI operating from the Castle in Accra. Some leaders of the Asafo Company of Gomoa Fetteh identified them as having been to Fetteh on April 16, 2010 as BNI officials to solicit the support of the members of the Asafo Company to impose one Cabby Kay on the people as the acting chief of the town. The police at Apam was invited to arrest the accused persons and upon investigations discovered that the ID Cards they were holding were fake. Mr Alexander Graham, Counsel for the accused persons, made frantic efforts to secure a bail for them but the court declined his request. 2 June 10
