Two in court for trading in pornographic materials

Accra, Aug. 10, GNA – A Circuit Court in Accra on Wednesday imposed a fine of 700,000 cedis each on two vendors, who were convicted of possessing and trading in obscene materials.

The vendors, Maxwell Danso and Abraham Sam, who pleaded guilty, would in default serve 14 months jail term each.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) George Abavelim told the court that following the public outcry over the ascendancy of the pornographic materials, a team of Policemen from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) was despatched to the Kwame Nkrumah Circle and Accra Polytechnic areas to check and effect arrest. The Prosecution said on reaching the Ridge taxi rank at Nkrumah Circle, an undercover Police Officer approached Danso for some pornographic materials.

Danso took the Police Officer to a hideout and sold to her two copies of the materials for 120,000 cedis.

While transacting the business, the Police Officers swooped on Danso and arrested him. During a search in his room seven copies of pornographic materials were retrieved.

ASP Abavelim said in the case of Sam, he had displayed some of the obscene materials.

The Prosecution said Sam sold a copy of the material to a Police Officer for 50,000 cedis.

Six additional copies were retrieved from Sam’s shelves. 10 Aug. 05
