Two Ghana Immigration Officers Shot in Ambush at Nagani, Upper East Region

Two officers with the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) came under attack on the night of Sunday, November 2, after unknown gunmen ambushed and shot them at Nagani, a community in the Tempane District of the Upper East Region.

According to information gathered from sources within the GIS regional command, the incident occurred while the officers were returning home from night duty on a motorbike. The assailants, believed to have laid in wait, opened fire on the unsuspecting officers, leaving both with severe gunshot wounds.

The injured officers were quickly transported to the Upper East Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga, where they are currently receiving emergency treatment.

Though the Immigration Service has not yet issued an official statement, preliminary information suggests that an investigation is underway to identify and apprehend the attackers.

This latest assault adds to a worrying trend of violent attacks against border security personnel in northern Ghana. Barely a month ago, a similar incident was recorded at Gbintiri, where gunmen opened fire on two immigration officers manning an inland checkpoint.

That earlier attack resulted in the death of Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICO II) Rafiq Mohammed, while his colleague, AICO II Oppong Daniel, sustained life-threatening injuries. Investigators at the time recovered an AK-47 shell casing and a service rifle registered as GH/GIS/HQACN 668516-1646 from the crime scene.

The recurring attacks have reignited national concern about the safety of immigration officers deployed along Ghana’s border communities—areas often marked by security vulnerabilities and limited logistical support.
