Two chiefs in Jomoro cry for help

The chiefs and people of Bonyere and Ezinlibo in the Jomoro District have appealed to the government to help find solution to acute soil erosion that had affected their communities.

Nana Nyameke Annor III, Chief of Bonyere and Tufuhene Nana Boavo of Ezinlibo, made the appeal when the Member of Parliament for Jomoro, Wing Commander Francis Kabenla Anaman (rtd) retired met them at separate meetings at their towns on Monday.

The MP was on a “thank you tour” of the constituency to thank the people for voting for him during the 2012 general elections.

According to two chiefs the erosion had threatened to pull down most buildings despite efforts by the people to check it.

The chiefs said the people had used sand bags to check the erosion but to no avail. Nana Boavo added that the soil erosion had created deep valleys in town making it very dangerous to walk at night.

Wing Commander Anaman said checking the erosion was a capital intensive project that cannot be financed with the Common Fund and appealed to the people to exercise restraint while efforts were made to seek donor assistance for the project.

Outlining some of his achievements the MP said he had been able to get an investor who is constructing 1,200 stalls at the new site of the Elubo Market under Build and Operate Transfer (BOT) terms.

He explained that under the BOT, the investor on completion of the market would operate them for some period to defray his expenses before handing them over to the District Assembly.
