Techiman (B/A), Jan. 20 GNA- Mr Emmanuel N. Num, Techiman Municipal Deputy Coordinating Director, has called on community opinion leaders to fight against child labour and all other forms of child abuse. Mr Num was addressing a forum to launch anti-child labour campaign at Techiman in the Brong-Ahafo Region, organised by a local FM station, ASTA and Business Advocacy Centre (BUSAC), a non-governmental organisation.
He said child labour was denying a number of children their right to education.
Mr Num said the District Assembly was a empowering woman to be economically viable in other to cater for their children to prevent the practice.
Madam Juliana Amponsah, Regional Coordinator of the National Commission on Women and Development said the fight against HIV/AIDS could not be possible without a war against child labour, which leads to many social vices such as sexual promiscuity.
The Director of ASTA FM, Mr Daniel Kwadwo Tawiah, in a speech read on his behalf, called on the Administrator of the District Assembly’s Common Fund, to commit part of the fund to help combat child labour. The General Manager of ASTA Mr John Owusu Asante said the station was collaborating with BUSAC to free about 200 people from child labour, by June 2006.
Nana Owusu Gyare II, Akwamuhene of the Techiman Traditional Area, who chaired the function commended BUSAC and ASTA FM for highlighting the phenomenon of child labour and working towards its elimination in the Municipality. 20 Jan. 05
