Twenty-seven more drivers arrested by Kasoa MTTU

Kasoa (C/R), Oct. 17, GNA – The Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) at Kasoa in the Central Region, last week arrested 27 more drivers for various traffic offences.

This brings to 81 the number of drivers arrested since the exercise to help reduce accidents on the road started on September 19, 2005. The offences include failing to renew driving licenses and insurance covers, driving with defective light, over speeding and failure to observe road signs.

Mr Michael R. Nyaaba, Kasoa District Commander of the MTTU told the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Kasoa on Saturday that, 54 drivers have so far been fined a total of 21.4 million cedis by court. According to Mr Nyaaba, who is also the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in charge of the Kasoa District MTTU, the drivers, who were arrested last week would soon be sent to court. ASP Nyaaba said some of the drivers were initially warned and released for committing minor offences including failure to produce triangles and license.

He said the exercise was achieving a great result, since most drivers were now cautious on the road. Meanwhile, most drivers plying between Winneba Junction and Kasoa have expressed concern about the attitude of some MTTU officers, who after arresting them arraigned them in Accra, instead of in the district.

According to them the situation was creating a big problem for them and appealed to the authorities to intervene on their behalf. In a related development, the Winneba District Police Commander, Mr Nicholas Gasu had expressed grave concern about the two fatal accidents that occurred between Gomoa Okyereko and Gomoa Potsin Junction, which claimed the lives of ten people and injured over twenty others, two weeks ago.

Mr Gasu has therefore, cautioned drivers plying the newly rehabilitated Kasoa-Winneba road to made travelling on it enjoyable.
