Twenty-canoes damage in rainstorm in Winneba

A severe rainstorm that hit Winneba and its surroundings recently damaged twenty-two canoes anchored on the sea and destroyed fishing nets valued at about GH¢200,000.

Five of the canoes and the nets were destroyed beyond repairs.

The Effutu Municipal Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Mr Rolland Quainoo, visited the area on Monday to console the fishermen.

The visit was also to make him know the extent of damage caused to the canoes and the nets.

Mr Quainoo after inspection of the canoes said about 70 bundles of the net would be needed to support the victims.

He appealed to the fishermen to insure themselves and their businesses to enable them get insurance support in case of disaster or accidents.

Mr Quainoo also advised the fishermen to pull their canoes to safety instead of anchoring them on the sea, especially when they see signals of rains to avoid similar occurrence in the future.

Mr Kojo Donkor, a victim on behalf of his colleagues, thanked the NADMO officer for his concern.

He hoped that the Assembly and the government would come to their aid.
