The Ghana Trades Union Congress (GTUC), has organised a conference to discuss prospects of the informal sector of the economy, in Accra,
Mr. Kofi Asamoah, Secretary General of GTUC, said the informal sector of the economy employed about 80 per cent of the workforce, and contributed to the production of goods and services.
He appealed to Government to support the informal sector to be able to create more jobs for the youth, and advised workers of the sector to form unions to articulate their views.
Mr. Asamoah said the International Labour Organisation has outline decent work agenda for the West African informal sector, including job creation by Government, rights of workers, social protection and social dialogue.
Mr. Asamoah cautioned workers not to allow self-seeking politicians to use them to create violence in the December elections.
Mrs. Rose Quaye, Desk Officer for the Informal Economy, said the informal sector of the economy was “characterised by decent work deficits such as limited access to productive capital, low and insecure income, underemployment and discrimination as well as low representation.”**
