The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has expressed its opposition to the American-led coalition attack on Iraq.
Mr Kwasi Adu-Amankwaah, Secretary General of the TUC stated the union’s position when he addressed the first quarterly meeting of the Kumasi District Council of Labour on Friday.
He said the coalition’s unilateral act of war undermined international law and diplomacy, adding, “this is regrettable”.
Mr Adu-Amankwaah said, “we are not a government. We are a civil society organisation and therefore have to speak out.”
The TUC Secretary General said mass protests in America and Britain, the key elements of the coalition, showed that the decision to go to war was not popular with even the peoples there.
Mr Adu-Amankwaah pointed out that it was time Africa learnt to let its views be heard on matters that are not in the interest of the continent.
He said there is nothing to defend President Saddam Hussein about but the United Nations (UN) as a body charged with the promotion and maintenance of global peace and security, should not have been side-stepped by America and its allies.
