TUC awaits findings of investigations into SSNIT

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) says it is awaiting the outcome of investigations into allegations of malfeasance in the administration of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).

In the wake of several allegations of financial impropriety and conflict of interest against SSNIT last year, JOY FM petitioned the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to take up the matter.

The Secretary General of the TUC, Kwasi Adu-Amankwaa told JOY FM in an interview that the union has not abandoned its stance on how SSNIT manages workers’ contributions.

According to him, the TUC petitioned the previous Parliament on the issue but it could not act because its term of office was nearing completion. The TUC therefore petitioned the current Parliament to investigate the allegations against SSNIT.

He said the union, last week, received a letter from the Clerk of Parliament, in which the Speaker explained that since CHRAJ was investigating the matter, it was necessary for all parties to wait for the outcome of the investigations. Parliament will then act if people express dissatisfaction with the findings.

Mr. Adu Amankwah said the TUC agreed with the Speaker’s suggestion and was therefore awaiting the findings, which it will examine critically. Hearings are on-going at the commission where JOY FM’s Komla Dumor has given evidence in investigations into the alleged malfeasance and conflict of interest in the administration of the Trust over the years
