Trotro mate crushed to death

A driver’s mate lost his life on Friday morning when a harbour truck crashed into his trotro bus.

The two drivers in-charge of the 207 bus with registration number AW 1848Y and harbour truck with registration number GT7768A respectively, sustained injuries.

Superintendent of Police Oduro Amaning, Tema Regional MTTU Commander, told the Ghana News Agency at the scene that the accident occurred at about 1130 hours at the Mankoadze roundabout near the VVIP Bus Terminal, at Tema Community One.

Supt. Oduro said the two drivers were rushed to the Tema General Hospital while the body of the mate, with his intestines gushed out, had been deposited at the hospital’s morgue.

He said information gathered indicated that the trotro, which was heading towards the Tema Community Centre, parked behind a stationary truck for passengers to alight.

He said the driver’s mate decided to pour water into the vehicle’s radiator while the passengers were alighting.

Supt. Amaning said in the process of pouring the water, the harbour truck lost control and hit the back of the trotro, trapping the mate in between it and the stationary vehicle.

He expressed worry that despite several warnings to drivers not to use that place as a lorry station, some drivers had defied the Police orders and picked passengers from the place.

When the GNA got to the scene at about 1150 hours, a towing vehicle from the Ghana National Fire Service was towing the truck to give way for the heavy traffic that had mounted as a result of the accident.

The wind screens of the two vehicles were broken with the front and rear spots of the trotro badly damaged.
