Transport fares in Ghana today have been increased by fifteen percent following a publication from the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council earlier this week.
This is the first increase to be recorded in transport fares this year.
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) had also justified the 15% transport fares increment saying fuel prices and prices of the spare parts have gone up since the last review of transport fares last year.
The GPRTU says the increment is long overdue and should have been done two months ago.
The Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG), has also expressed disappointed about 15% increment, saying the increment by the Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU) was “untenable and unacceptable.”
Upon this, ghanaweb.com decided to go on the streets of Accra to ask Ghanaians what they think about the increment of the new transport fares; to which majority of them say they don’t have any problem with the increment since this is the first time GPRTU is taking such a step the whole of this year, so it is acceptable but admit it will affect people due to the upwards adjustment of consumables that will result.
They also called on government to increase Salaries of workers, to even out the high cost of living that may arise as a result of the increment.
However, some are also of the opposing view that the GPRTU should have waited for at least 6 months into the year before making such an increment.
We spoke to some “Trotro” Divers; and most of them are also not in agreement with the 15% increment.
