Accra, Aug 14, — The Ministry of Health has made available in the psychiatric hospitals stocks of drugs for the free treatment and management of epilepsy. Nana Paddy Acheampong, deputy Minister of Health said this today when he inaugurated the Ghana Epilepsy Association in Accra. Formed in 1995, the Association aims among others at creating awareness on the disease and help in the rehabilitation of patients. Nana Acheampong regretted that in both developed and developing countries, the disease is shrouded in myths and mystic causes leading to the gross ignorance of its true nature. “Such ignorance has generated adverse public attitudes to those suffering from the disease, thus depriving them of their human and national rights”. Nana Acheampong said epilepsy is a general brain disorder which responds to treatment and said the public should be well informed about it since it is not infectious neither is it caused by evil spirits or the sins of an individual. He congratulated the association and called on the public to offer the necessary assistance in their quest to help the epileptic.
