Transport orgs warned not to fight over lorry parks

Wa, April 10, GNA- Members of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the TUC have been asked to refrain from fighting with other transport organisations over the use of lorry parks.

“You must learn to co-exist with other transport unions as the government will not accept a situation where you kill other business in order to make your business survive”, Mr Kwadwo Adjei-Darko, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development told the union members at Wa on Tuesday as part of his working visit to the Upper West Region.

The Minister inaugurated a 20-seater water closet toilet at the lorry park.

The facility was constructed at a cost of 256 million cedis with funds from the HIPC initiative.

Freedom of association was enshrined in the constitution and the NPP had a cardinal belief in development of freedom, therefore nobody had the right to stop another from doing his lawful business, Mr Adjei-Darko, emphasised. He urged the GPRTU to take good care of the toilet facility which was the first of its kind in the region, noting that some people would want to destroy it for partisan reasons.

“When it comes to development issues, let us not allow politics to divide us”.

He told the youth in the area not to allow themselves to be used by some politicians to cause mischief.

Mr Sahanun Mogtari, Upper West Regional Minister urged the Union to keep the lorry parks clean to prevent the outbreak of diseases. Mr Mogtari regretted that most of the refuse containers that had been supplied to residents of the Wa Municipality had been burnt and that did not give the residents a good image.

He therefore advised the residents to refrain from pouring hot ash and embers into the containers.

Mr Godfrey Bayon Tangu, The Wa Municipal Chief Executive said the assembly used its first HIPC relief package of one billion cedis to construct five-three unit classroom blocks and a clinic.
