Three people have tragically died and dozens more injured after a security barrier collapsed at Algeria’s 5 July Stadium in Algiers. The incident occurred moments after MC Alger secured the league title in a 0-0 draw against NC Magra.
The health ministry confirmed that fans had surged forward to celebrate the victory, causing the barrier to give way. This led to a devastating fall from the upper stands onto the lower tier.
More than 70 injured fans were rushed to three hospitals, with most now discharged. Players and staff from MC Alger responded by visiting the hospitals to donate blood for the victims.
The stadium was packed with jubilant supporters, and the match itself was marked by a carnival-like atmosphere with green flares lighting up the stands. However, the tragedy cast a dark shadow over the celebrations, leading to the postponement of the league trophy presentation.
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune offered his condolences to the bereaved families and wished a swift recovery for the injured.
MC Alger’s win secured their second consecutive league title, but the joy of victory has been overshadowed by grief and mourning for those lost and hurt in the tragic incident.
