Traditional Birth Attendants Upgrade Skills

Doryum (Greater Accra), 12 Nov.,

A 10-day workshop for traditional birth attentions (TBA’s) has opened at Doryum in the Dangme West district. The workshop which is being sponsored by Save the Children Fund (SCF), a non-governmental organisation based in the United Kingdom is under the auspices of the Centre for Integrated Rural Development (CEFRIEND). The principal medical assistant in charge of the Dodowa sub- health services, Mr. J.Y. Dorho, who performed the opening ceremony, said the Ministry of Health attaches importance to the training of TBA’s because of the unique role they play in the health delivery system, especially among rural communities. Mr. Dorho expressed the Ministry of Health’s gratitude to the CEFRIEND for the training programme which will turn out additional 17 TBA’s to assist the 32 in the district. Mr. A. Mensah, project director and Miss Rosette Serwanga, a Ugandan community development programme manager, both of CEFRIEND, said another programme will be organised for community based distributors of family planning devices in the Dangme West district soon.
