Kyiren-Nkwanta (C/R), Oct. 13, GNA – Traders who patronise Kyiren-Nkwanta market in the Central Region have threatened to boycott payment of market tolls to the Gomoa District Assembly if the assembly fails to start work on the rehabilitation of the market by October 16. The traders said the condition of the market is horrible and appealed to the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development to impress upon the Gomoa District Assembly to ensure immediate commencement of rehabilitation works on the market.
Speaking to the Kyiren-Nkwanta electoral area assemblyman, Mr Nicholas Kwame Ablekum-Sam, and Nana Emissah IV, Tufohene of Gomoa-Kyiren at a meeting at Kyiren-Nkwanta at the weekend, leaders of the market women said the assembly had failed to heed their calls over the years.
They said instead of paying the market tolls to the assembly they would rather channel such monies through the assemblyman, traditional authorities and unit committees to utilise them for the rehabilitation work to be implemented in phases.
Mr Ablekum-Sam confirmed the traders’ allegations and said the market has not witnessed any meaningful rehabilitation since it was built in the early 1970s.
He said though the assembly approved 100 million cedis for the rehabilitation of the market about a year ago the project had not been implemented.
Nana Emissah said the market could fetch the assembly appreciable revenue when conditions are improved to attract big time traders from Cape Coast, Mankessim, Kasoa, and Accra.
