Trader in court for pouring acid on her mother

Gifty Simpson, a trader who allegedly poured acid on her mother during a scuffle on Tuesday appeared before an Accra Circuit Court charged with causing harm.

While the Police are holding Gifty for pouring acid on the complainant Madam Beatrice Newman, Gifty contended that she rather poured anointing oil on her.

Gifty has therefore pleaded not guilty to the charge and the court presided over by Ms Sedina Agbemava admitted her to GH?8,000 cedis bail with two sureties.

Gifty, a nursing mother, is expected to re-appear on April 19.

Police Chief Inspector Adamu M. Awal, told the court that the accused and the complainant reside in the same house at Pigfarm, Accra.

He said for the past years, Gifty have been subjecting her mother to insults and because of that the complainant had asked her to quit the house.

Chief Inspector Awal said the complainant who took her deep freezer for repairs brought the refrigerator back home, and on reaching the house, the accused had put her washing machine at the place where her mother removed the freezer.

He said as a result, an argument ensued between them and in the process; the accused poured a bottle of acid on her mother’s foot.

The complainant reported the matter to the Police and the accused was arrested while a medical form was issued Madam Newman for treatment.

Gifty in her cautioned statement admitted having poured anointing oil on her mother’s foot and not acid.

However, based on the medical form, Gifty was charged.**
