Accra July 24, GNA – Tourists participating in this year’s Emancipation Day celebration will on Monday start a week’s tour of slave sites in the Northern Region.
The tour would take them to the Wa Na’s palace, the George Ekem Fergurson’s grave and other sites at Tumu, Bolgatanga and Tamale where the activities of the slave trade would be re-enacted.
Ms Bridget Katsriku, Chief Director at the Ministry of Tourism and Modernization of the Capital City speaking to the GNA pointed out that the slave trade was not only concentrated in the coastal areas of Ghana alone as many people think.
She said, “Some of the slave were taken from the north and driven to the coast, we want to make this year’s Emancipation more meaningful”. Ms Katsriku said it was necessary for them to go through all the selected slave routes to get the true meaning of emancipation.
At Tumu, the tourists would visit the Gwollu Defence Wall and go to Navrongo, Paga, Sirigu, Tamale, Salaga, Sakpale, Katabu and Yeji. Ms Katsriku called on Ghanaians to develop an interest and to participate in the activities of the Emancipation Day celebration.
