Residents of some areas in Accra have been forced out of their homes by floods after Wednesday evening’s torrential rainfall, with high casualties at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, where a filling station got burnt.
Scores of homes submerged in water, Ghana News Agency observed after torrential rains, which also left many roads impassable and residents homeless.
The rain began around 5:30pm and continued until the early hours of Thursday, leaving in its wake a disaster.
Many houses were being inundated by the water, with residents climbing on roof tops in desperate attempts to save their lives.
Several low-lying houses around the Odaw drain and Adabraka were submerged.
The evening’s downpour, accompanied by thunder and lightning, is believed to have caused damage, running into several thousands of Ghana cedis, though authorities are yet to come out with the cost.
The National Disaster and Management Organization (NADMO), the Ghana Armed Forces, Police Service and some Government Officials are on the ground recusing people who are still trapped in their homes.
Other areas that were severely hit by the floods included Kaneshie, Pantang OB Down, Coca-cola Spintex Road, Dome Kwabenya, Weija Junction, Dansoman, Haatso and Agbogba.
Residents of Malam, Alajo Shiashi, and La Alajo, are mourning the loss of human lives that resulted from the floods.
