Torrential rainfall causes extensive damage in Sunyani

Sunyani, Oct. 5, GNA – A torrential downpour has led to unprecedented floods in some parts of the Sunyani Municipality, causing extensive damage to public and private property.

Several houses are marooned in knee-deep waters and personal belongings running into millions of cedis have been destroyed and the occupants displaced.

The areas included Penkwase, New Town and Nkwabeng, all in Sunyani and Kotokrom, near the regional capital.

No casualties had however been reported when Ghana News Agency contacted the Municipal Police Station.

The Meteorological Station said it recorded 96.1 of rainfall, which lasted throughout Monday night.

Mr Kwasi Annan-Frimpong, NADMO Municipal Co-ordinator told the GNA that, the rains had caused “massive” damage in the areas to the extent that stakeholders, including the Regional Minister, Nana Kwadwo Seinti held a crisis meeting on Monday over the disaster.

The stakeholders, including officials of NADMO, Environmental Protection Agency and Ghana Highways Maintenance Unit later toured the affected areas.
