Toilet attendant dies in open pit

A 56-year-old toilet attendant of the Adukrom public toilet died when he fell into a pit behind the toilet last Friday.

At about 10.30am, Nii Clotey Korley reportedly went to the back of the toilet to wash down and prepare for a funeral at Nsawam. However, he fell into the uncovered pit.

The body of Korley, who was employed by the Akuapem North District Assembly to maintain the toilet a year ago, has been retrieved from the pit.

Confirming the incident to The Mirror, the Akuapem North District Police Commander, Superintendent Henry Bacho, said on July 26, 2013 the police received a message that somebody had fallen into a pit at Adukrom.

He said he and other policemen went to the scene where they saw a huge crowd gathered at the public place of convenience.

According to Superintendent Bacho, a friend of Korley told the police that Korle had sent him to buy some packets of cigarettes while he (Korley) went to take his bath and prepare for a funeral at Nsawam.

The Commander said the deceased’s friend told them that when he returned from the errand, he could not find Korley and, therefore, went to the back of the toilet where he saw his pair of slippers and shirt hanging on a wall.

The police, together with the residents, had to use sticks to search for Korley’s body in the uncovered pit and succeeded in bringing out the body from the pit with the aid of some iron rods.

According to the Police Commander, when the police inspected the body of Korley, they found no physical marks on it and took it to the morgue of the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital for autopsy.
