Togo commends Ghanaians

Accra, June 4, GNA – Mr J. P. Gbikpi-Benissan, Togo’s Ambassador to Ghana on Friday expressed his appreciation to Ghanaians, who supported the Embassy in its complaints against the National Democrat, an Accra Newspaper’s unfavourable publication that impugned the existing good relationship between the two countries.

“We thank you all for your support within the framework of reinforcement of the co-operation and the integration between the people of Ghana and Togo in particular and those of ECOWAS in general,” the Ambasador said in a statement made available to the Ghana News Agency. The Embassy lodged a complaint at the Media Commission against the National Democrat, the reporter and the publisher, following an article entitled “I rule Ghana, Prez. Eyadema Declares in Lome” published in the March 8-10, 2004 edition of the paper.

The Publishers of the National Democrat had since apologised to the President General Eyadema of Togo.

The statement said the apology rendered to President General Eyadema was an indication that one could be wrong in his or her judgement of others.

“His excellency President Eyadema, fervent artisan of forgiveness and peace will appreciate the reaction of the National Democrat,” the statement added.
