Togbega Gbogbolu appeals for piped water for school

Vakpo (V/R), Sept. 8, GNA – Togbega Gbogbolu V, the Paramount Chief of Vakpo Traditional Area, has appealed to the Community Water and Sanitation Agency and the Kpando District Assembly to extend piped water to Vakpo Senior High School.

He said lack of portable water was affecting teaching and learning.

Togbega Gbogbolu said this when the Parliamentary Sub-Committee on Water Resources, Works and Housing inspected water systems in the community.

He said the school, with over 800 students, relies on two boreholes and students had to wake up very early in the morning to queue for water.

Mr Francis Ganyaglo, the Kpando District Chief Executive, conceded that the district faced serious water problems but assured that soon the situation would be rectified.

Nana Abu-Bobsra, the Member of Parliament for Fomena and Deputy Ranking Member of the Committee, chastised the Water and Sanitation Development Board in the Community for failing to extend water to the whole community and its immediate environs for the past six years.

Mr David Assumeng Tetteh, MP for Shia-Osudoku and Chairman of the Committee, said he was disappointed that the Board was in so much debt and had only 500 Ghana cedis in its account and 300 Ghana cedis in its replaceable account.

He said such mismanagement could not encourage the government to invest in Community Water projects.

Mr Henry Ampah Johnson, the Regional Engineer of Community Water and Sanitation Agency, appealed to traditional authorities and district assemblies to exercise oversight responsibilities over the Boards to ensure accountability, transparency and efficient management of the facilities.

He said the Boards were supposed to raise enough money through the sale of treated water in the community and use the resources to maintain the system and expand the facility.
