Sakumono, June 02, GNA – The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) is considering banning holiday activities on the shoulders of the Sakumono beach road to prevent disaster in the area.
The place, which is popularly called Titanic beach, stretches about 40 metres between the highway and the sea posing danger to both motorists and holiday makers. Hundreds of holiday makers have turned the place into a recreation area where people, especially children and the youth, throng during holidays, weekends and sometimes in the evenings for entertainment. Apart from parking haphazardly, canopies are erected with chairs and tables provided under them in addition to showcasing of alcoholic beverages.
Khebab sellers do brisk business and music is blared from several loudspeakers.
While some of the holiday makers cross the busy road without caution others also involve themselves in immoral activities. The Chief Executive Officer of the TMA, Mr Robert Kempes Ofosuware, said apart from the dangers the activities pose, the assembly has to spend money to clean the filth they leave behind. Mr Ofosuware, who inspected the place, said TMA would properly develop the nearby Mighty Beach to be used by the holiday makers. He said the assembly would consider a public/private partnership with the Nungua Tortorley Wulomo who has walled the beach as he is in-charge of the Mukwen Lagoon.
