TMA/SSNIT demolishes structures at Adentan

Adentan (G/A), Aug 27, GNA-On Tuesday a demolition task force under orders from the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) and the Tema Municipal Assembly (TMA) demolished about 60 structures, mostly kiosks at the centre of Adenta.

Most of the affected structures, both wooden and metal containers, served as selling points for foodstuffs, vegetables, hair saloons, boutiques and general goods.

Mr Samuel Akoto, Acting Tema Municipal Engineer who led the six-hour demolition exercise, said SSNIT has earmarked the area for a market, clinic and other social facilities for the residents. SSNIT, through TMA Engineers, has for the past two years informed the illegal squatters about its intention to embark on the demolition exercise.

Mr Akoto said the final warning was issued last week but the people remained adamant. ”We have given these illegal squatters enough time to leave the area.”

When the exercise started on Tuesday some of the affected people removed their belongings while others pleaded for more time. Some of the residents described the exercise as unfortunate and inappropriate because both the SSNIT and the TMA have failed to provide them with a market.

The taskforce extended the exercise to Ashale Botwe where all structures built on an area earmarked for the laying of pipelines were pulled down.

Most residents at Ashale Botwe were happy about the exercise because the structures and other factors have delayed the project. 27 Aug. 03
