President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria has extended his deepest condolences to President John Mahama, the government, and the people of Ghana after the tragic helicopter crash on August 6 that claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and six others.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed profound sorrow, assuring Ghanaians that the Nigerian government and its people stand in solidarity with them in this moment of national mourning.
He described the victims as patriots who lost their lives while serving their country, urging the bereaved families and the nation at large to find comfort in honouring their sacrifice. He also prayed for the souls of the departed to find eternal rest and for strength for the families left behind.
The accident involved a Ghana Armed Forces Z‑9 helicopter with three crew members and five passengers, all of whom perished. The aircraft, which was on official duty from Accra to Obuasi, reportedly lost radar contact shortly after takeoff before crashing in the Ashanti Region.
Following the tragedy, President Mahama ordered all national flags to fly at half‑mast and suspended official engagements as the country mourned its loss.
President Tinubu, in his message, reiterated Nigeria’s unwavering support for Ghana, affirming that both nations share in the grief and stand together in this difficult time.
