TICO to boost energy production

Aboadze(W/R),Dec. 6, GNA – Nana Osafo Adjie, the General Manager of the Takoradi International Company(TICO), has said the company would generate more power with natural gas from the Jubilee Oil Fields.

He said TICO generated over 9.2 million megawatts of electrical power since the plant started commercial operations about 10 years ago. It will soon increase its power generation capacity to 330 megawatts when oil and gas drilling starts at the Jubilee Oil Field. Nana Osafo Adjie said this at a grand durbar to climax the 10th anniversary of the company (TICO) at Aboadze at the weekend.

Nana Adjie said TICO power generation capacity constituted a significant portion of the country’s energy needs for both domestic and the export market He said beyond power generation, TICO had implemented its corporate social responsibility programme that captured important sectors such as education, health, sanitation and culture. It has supported over 1,000 students in the company’s operational area from the basic through to the tertiary level over the past 10 years.

Mr. Kwaku Awortwe, the Chief Executive Officer of the Volta River Authority (VRA) and Vice chairman of the TICO Board Directors, commended the staff and management of the company for their hard work and dedication which had yielded positive results.

He said the TICO, being the first Independent Power Producer in the country, had cast a niche for itself and a sound foundation for more independent power producers to invest in the energy sector. Mr. Awortwe said VRA would expand its power generation capacity from 300MW to 500MW in the next couple of years to meet production demand of both domestic and the export market.

He said the government’s vision to transmit electricity to 600 more communities in the next couple of years would be achieved with the construction of the third phase of the plant underway. Some 207 students in the company’s operational area were presented with cheques as part of the TICO’s Kramer Scholarship programme. 06 Dec. 10
