Three remanded in custody for defrauding a Mason

Accra, Feb. 17, GNA – An Accra Circuit Court on Tuesday remanded three persons in Police custody for defrauding Mr Edward Kwaku Attah, a Mason of 11 million cedis.

Richard Biribi, Phanuel Kudjo and Felix Mensah, all unemployed, were charged with defrauding by false pretences. They succeeded in defrauding Mr Attah under the pretext of retrieving a seized luggage belonging to Bribi’s brother.

Their pleas were not taken and they would reappear on March 3. Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Paul Frimpong told the court that in early February, Mensah approached Mr Attah and told him that Bribi, who was his elder brother, had returned from Guinea and wanted him to build a house for him.

The Prosecution said Bribi later came to inform Mr Attah that the luggage he brought from Cote d’Voire had been seized by Kudjo, who was the driver, so he should help by paying the driver 10 million cedis being the amount he charged for the luggage.

ASP Frimpong said Mr Attah agreed and made part payment, but the driver refused to release the luggage insisting that the amount should be paid in full.

The Prosecution said in the process Bribi opened a bag and drew a blue paper of the size of a hundred dollar note and smeared a chemical on it.

ASP Frimpong said Bribi then asked Mensah and the wife of Mr Attah to go to the nearest Forex Bureau to change it.

Prosecution said when the Forex Bureau accepted the money Bribi demanded that Mr Attah should bring more money for him to become a shareholder in his company.

ASP Frimpong said the accused persons took Mr Attah and his wife to a Mallam where after drinking a concoction, he was made to swear an oath of secrecy.

Prosecution said Mr Attah become suspicious and reported the incident to the Police.
