Three New Contestants for GJA Elections

Accra, March 01, GNA – Two new persons have filed to contest the post of President and one for Organizing Secretary of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), when nominations for those positions, which were reopened for a week last Tuesday, closed on February 28. They are Mrs Gina Ama Blay, Managing Editor of the Daily Guide and Mr Ransford Tetteh, News Editor of the Daily Graphic, who have filed to contest for President.

Mr Alfred Ogbamey, Managing Editor of the Gye Nyame Concord, is to contest the post of Organizing Secretary.

A statement issued in Accra and signed by Mr Benedict Assorow, Chairman of the GJA Elections Committee said Mrs Blay and Mr Tetteh would in the election scheduled for March 9, contest Ms Sarah Akrofi Quarcoo, Editor-in-Chief of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation. It said Mr Ogbamey would contest Mr David Agbenu, Editor-in-Charge of the Education Desk of the Ghanaian Times.

The statement said nominations for the post of President was re-opened last Tuesday following the withdrawal by the incumbent, Ms Ajoa Yeboah-Afari, Editor of the Ghanaian Times, from seeking re-election. It said that of Organizing Secretary was also reopened after Mr Emmanuel Otuei Annancy, Editor of the Inter African Newspaper, was disqualified by the Committee after vetting.

Meanwhile, Mr Tetteh has in a letter to the Committee requested for an extension of the campaign period, “to provide a level playing field for the contest.” The statement said the Committee was due to meet on March 1, to consider the request.
