Three mobile phone thieves jailed 72 months

Accra, Jan. 8, GNA – A Madina District Magistrate’s Court in Accra on Thursday jailed three men for 24 months each for snatching a mobile phone from a telephonists at a communication centre.

Ibrahim Seidu, 19, an Aluminium Pot Maker, Jelilu Amidu, 20, Mechanic and Iddi Tanko, 31, Welder, pleaded guilty to three counts of conspiracy to commit crime, stealing and causing damage.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Ebenezer Darko said the first accused is based at Accra New Town with second and third accused persons staying at Maamobi in Accra.

He said on January 5, this year at about 1500 hours, the three accused persons mounted and rode one unregistered Honda motor bike together from Maamobi to Madina in Accra and on reaching “Gintess” Communication centre at Madina New Road, near Rawlings Circle, the first accused with the connivance of the others decided to make a call. Chief Inspector Darko said the first and third accused persons then entered the communication centre and dialled 028-237225 and 511774 but received no response.

He said the first accused as if bidding farewell to the complainant, Georgina Nti, a communication attendant snatched her A50 Siemens Mobile phone on the counter and the two ran to join the second accused and they sped off on their bike amidst the raising of the alarm and in the process the thieves crashed into a truck loaded with cement. One Police Inspector Akuffo of the Panthers Unit appeared on the scene and arrested them.
