The Ghana Health Service (GHS), the Nkoranza Municipal Assembly and transport unions in the Municipality are to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enable drivers offer emergency services to pregnant women in labour.
The agreement would help address the problem where drivers bargain on fares before taking pregnant women in labour to health facilities to reduce maternal deaths.
This was announced by Mr. Augustine Frimpong, Nkoranza Municipal Disease Control Officer, when addressing leaders of the Nkoranza Branch of GPRTU and PROTOA at Nkoranza.
The meeting was to ensure effective implementation of activities on the Maternal Accelerated Framework (MAF) launched by the GHS to help reduce maternal deaths in the country.
He called for collaborative efforts by stakeholders to reduce maternal and infant mortalities, a major challenge facing the country.
Mr. Frimpong stressed the need for Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) to refer complications to health facilities without delay to save lives.
Mr. Akwasi Oppong-Fosu, Chairman of Nkoranza Branch of PROTOA, pledged the support of the transport unions to assist GHS to promote the health of pregnant women to reduce maternal and infant mortalities.
He urged health professionals and workers in health facilities in the Municipality and TBAs to provide their contacts to drivers in their communities to assist in emergency cases.
