Three in court for allegedly possessing fake currencies

Accra, May 21, GNA – An Accra Circuit Court on Friday remanded into prison custody three persons for allegedly possessing fake 10,000 cedi notes. Francis Wettey, a teacher, Emmanuel Nii Wettey, a security man and Isaac Effah Boateng a trader pleaded not guilty before the court chaired by Mrs. Elizabeth Ankomah. Kofi, an accomplice is however on the run.

Prosecuting, Police Inspector Mary Agbozo told the court that on May 18, this year, the police received a telephone call from an operator of a chop bar and drinking spot at Christian Village in Accra, that Nii Wettey was allegedly paying for food he had bought with fake 10,000 cedi notes. The Police went to the scene and arrested him with 22 of the fake 10,000 cedi notes in his pocket. She said during police interrogation, Nii Wettey mentioned Wettey, the first accused as the one who gave them to him.

The prosecutor said the police arrested Wettey at Dome and during a search in his room at Darkuman, 80,000 cedis of the forged notes were found. She said Wettey told the police that it was Kofi, now at large, as the one who supplied him with the fake notes, adding that, Kofi took 500,000 cedis genuine notes in exchange of one million cedis fake notes.

The Prosecutor said during investigations, the police arrested Boateng, an accomplice who also had in his possession, fake 20,000 cedi and 10,000 cedi notes on him and he (Boateng) also mentioned Kofi as the supplier. She said Boateng took the police to Maamobi, a suburb of Accra in search of Kofi but he could not be traced. The accused persons would re-appear on Tuesday, June 1.
