Three ex-convicts who were released from prison after serving 35 years in jail for robbery have been re-arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command.
The suspects, Kwabena Agyei, 52, Samuel Nii Okaine, 52, and Thompson Nii Commey, 39, were alleged to have broken into a parked vehicle at Legon when they were grabbed by a mob.
The three, according to police, were nearly lynched by the mob before police arrived at the scene.
Items found on them included a T square also known as bazooka used for opening locked vehicles, a screw driver, two torchlights and a gate cutter.
Briefing the media, DCOP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Accra Regional Police Commander said two of the suspects, Samuel Nii Okaine and Kwabena Agyei were released recently from prison after serving 35 years and 5 years respectively in prison for robbery.
Suspect Thompson Nii Commey, however spent only two years on remand when he was recently granted bail by the court.
Yesterday around 10:30am, police received information that three men had been grabbed by a mob for breaking into a parked vehicle in front of the Legon Electricity Company Office.
When police got to the scene, the three had been besieged by a mob, some of who were wielding sticks, stones, clubs and other offensive weapons and using these to severely beat them up.
Police prevented the mob from lynching the suspects by moving suspects from the scene to the police station.
Later a man, whose name is being withheld, reported that he parked his vehicle in front of the Legon Electricity Office when the three suspects, holding the implements broke into the vehicle and took his hand bag.
The bag, according to the complainant, contained his personal documents and working tools.
Some onlookers who saw them breaking into the car raised an alarm and consequently called for their arrest.
DCOP Yohuno said the three would be arraigned before court on charges of robbery.
He urged vehicle users to be cautious and not put expensive items in the vehicle.
