Techiman, March 31, GNA – Three persons who refused to participate in a recent clean up exercise in Techiman and failed to clear overgrown weed at their premises have been fined a total of six million cedis by a magistrate court in Techiman.
They will go to jail for three months in hard labour in default. Yaa Dakowaa, Esther Amponsah and Akua Adubia, all residents at Kenten in Techiman pleaded guilty to the charge.
The court issued a bench warrant for the arrest of three others who failed to appear before the court to face a similar charge. They are Besuki, Linia Adwoa Baffourwaa and an unnamed baker.
Mr Ofori Ampofo, Senior Environmental Health Officer of the Techiman Municipal Assembly, told the court presided by Mr George Kruffah Addae that on March 24 environmental health officers on a routine inspection noticed their surroundings were filthy and weedy and arrested them Passing sentence, Mr Kruffah Addae called on the judiciary to wage war against the rampant and deliberate behaviour of some people to create unsanitary conditions.
He warned that the court would not deal leniently with anybody brought before him on sanitation offences.
