Gomoa Kyrian (C/R), July 3, GNA – Three children, aged between two and seven were burnt to death and properties costing millions of cedis were destroyed, when a room they were sleeping in caught fire last Wednesday night at Gomoa Kyrian, near Apam in the Central Region. They were Efua Edua, 2, Kojo Atta, 5 and Ekua Adjeiwaa, 7 years. Their 39-year-old mother, Madam Ekua Krampawaa, who was not present during the incident, collapsed on her return home, when she saw what had happened and was rushed to the Apam Catholic Hospital, where she was responding to treatment.
Mr Mark Awotwe Quaye, Assistant Division Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service at Apam and Mr Asare Baffour, Apam District Police Commander, have confirmed the story in a telephone interviews with the Ghana News Agency on Monday.
According to them, Madam Krampawaa, a caretaker of the house situated at the outskirt of the town not connected to electricity, left the place at about 2245 hours to buy something in the town. They said the woman later returned to see that three rooms including the children’s room were on fire and therefore raised alarm but before the fire could be quenched, everything in her room including the children had burnt to death.
According to them the course of fire has not yet been established and efforts were being made by the two institutions to find out. The bodies of the children had since been released to their families for burial.
