President John Dramani Mahama says Ghana must avoid a repeat of the chaotic events of the 2014 World Cup by ensuring discipline, transparency and professionalism in the Black Stars’ 2026 World Cup preparations.
Speaking to Sporty FM after Ghana sealed qualification, Mahama reflected on the infamous Brazil 2014 incident where the government flew cash to players to settle appearance fee disputes, an episode that tarnished the nation’s image on the world stage.
This time, he says, things must be done differently.
“The players have accounts now, so we can pay the money directly instead of carrying money physically and giving it to them,” President Mahama said. “That’s why I say the lessons of 2014 have been learned. I believe this will be a smoother, more disciplined and transparent campaign.”
He stressed that transparency is crucial to maintaining public trust and avoiding rumours and misunderstandings.
“To ensure Brazil doesn’t happen again, there should be discipline and transparency,” he added. “When decisions are made and funding is opaque, it creates all kinds of rumours and misperceptions in people’s minds.”
President Mahama believes that a clear and honest approach to player payments, logistics and decision-making will not only improve team morale but also restore confidence among supporters.
With Ghana heading to its fifth World Cup, expectations are high and the President insists that off-field organisation will be just as important as performances on the pitch.
“This campaign should be more disciplined,” he said. “We must do things the right way.”
Ghana will join the world’s best in the 2026 tournament, hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
